Outlook Express is an email client provided with Windows operating system. It stores data like e-mails, news etc. with .dbx extension on hard disks. There is a separate DBX file for each folder that is visible to us in Local Folders list of Outlook Express. These files reside in hidden folders known as Store Folders. In steps like disk formatting if these files need to be backed up, it is essential to follow a specific procedure (covered later in the article). If DBX file backup process is interrupted like due to unexpected system shutdown, they may get corrupt, which will require DBX Recovery solutions.
DBX files backed up on any storage media or local folders may not be recognized by Outlook Express after the process gets interrupted. DBX files may also get corrupt due to backup media errors and file system issues. In such cases, Outlook Express may fail to recognize these files with an error message as:
“Folder could not be displayed”
The correct procedure of backing up mail messages and restoring them back is as follows:
* We need to locate Store Folder first as Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store Folder.
* After this, the location can be used to access the folder through Run prompt (Start > Run).
* All the files of Store Folder can then be copied and pasted in a backup folder
* To import email messages from backup folder, we need use Import option of File menu
However to repair damaged DBX files from backup folder, we need to use third-party Outlook Express Recovery solutions. Outlook Express doesn’t provide any DBX Recovery tool to repair damaged DBX files. Thus, DBX repair and recovery tools are the only solutions to perform DBX repair.
These software analyze the damaged DBX file for corruption and restore them with original data and mail messages. These tools can be easily used because of their interactive interface and detailed documentation. Some of such tools can even repair .eml (.eml is the e-mail file extension for Windows Mail data files with Windows Vista onwards) messages and restore them in their normal format. These applications are designed as read-only and non-destructive tools. A user can use them in almost all cases of DBX corruption.
